The touch of your lips: haptic information speeds up auditory speech processing

چکیده
The human ability to follow speech gestures through the visual modality is a core component of speech perception. Remarkably, speech can be perceived not only by the ear and by the eye but also by the hand, with speech gestures felt from manual tactile contact with the speaker’s face. In the present study, early crossmodal interactions were investigated by comparing early auditory evoked potentials during auditory, audio-visual and audio-haptic speech perception in natural dyadic interactions between a listener and a speaker. Although participants were not experienced with audio-haptic speech perception, shortened latencies of auditory evoked potentials were observed in both audio-visual and audio-tactile modalities compared to the auditory modality. These results demonstrate early cross-modal interactions during face-to-face and hand-to-face speech perception and highlight a predictive role of visual and haptic information on auditory speech processing in dyadic interactions.

The sound of your lips: electrophysiological cross-modal interactions during hand-to-face and face-to-face speech perception
Recent magneto-encephalographic and electro-encephalographic studies provide evidence for cross-modal integration during audio-visual and audio-haptic speech perception, with speech gestures viewed or felt from manual tactile contact with the speaker's face. Given the temporal precedence of the haptic and visual signals on the acoustic signal in these studies, the observed modulation of N1/P2 a...

Objective: This study was a basic investigation of the ability of concurrent speech segregation in hearing impaired children. Concurrent segregation is one of the fundamental components of auditory scene analysis and plays an important role in speech perception. In the present study, we compared auditory late responses or ALRs between hearing impaired and normal children. Materials & Methods...
متن کاملHard to Put Your Finger on it: Haptic Modality Disadvantage in Conceptual Processing
Recent neuroimaging research has shown that perceptual and conceptual processing share a common, modality-specific neural substrate, while work on modality switching costs shows that they appear to share some of the same attentional mechanisms. In two experiments, we employed a modality detection task that displayed modality-specific object properties (e.g., shrill, warm, crimson) for extremely...
متن کاملTouch-screen technology for the dynamic display of -2D spatial information without vision: promise and progress.
Many developers wish to capitalize on touch-screen technology for developing aids for the blind, particularly by incorporating vibrotactile stimulation to convey patterns on their surfaces, which otherwise are featureless. Our belief is that they will need to take into account basic research on haptic perception in designing these graphics interfaces. We point out constraints and limitations in...
